Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Getting a tattoo is a significant decision that involves both financial and physical commitment. Once you have decided on the design and placement of your tattoo, it is essential to take good care of it to ensure it heals correctly and looks vibrant for years to come. In this blog post, we will discuss the steps you can take to properly care for your tattoo after getting inked.

- Follow your tattoo artist's aftercare instructions -

After completing your tattoo, your artist will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your new ink. This may include how long to keep on your bandage (3-4 days), how to remove the bandage safely (slowly, in a warm shower), washing your tattoo with soap and water, applying a healing ointment (do not use petroleum based products such as Vaseline, A & D Ointment or Aquaphor), and avoiding certain activities such as swimming or sun exposure (for 2 weeks at least). It is important to follow these instructions carefully to avoid any complications during the healing process.

- Keep your tattoo clean and dry -

For the first few days after getting a tattoo, it is important to keep the area clean and dry. If a bandage such as Derm Shield is used you may shower with it on. Avoid soaking your tattoo in water, including baths, swimming, or hot tubs for the first 10-14 days. Gently wash your tattoo with mild soap and warm water, and pat it dry with a clean towel. Once your tattoo has healed, it is still important to keep it clean and moisturized to prevent any infection or dryness.

- Apply a healing ointment or cream -

After washing your tattoo, you may apply a thin layer of healing ointment or cream recommended by your tattoo artist (I recommend natural oils and lotions such as Cocoa Butter (affiliate link), Aveeno Unscented (affiliate link), or check out this video on how to make your own). These products help soothe the skin and prevent infections while keeping the area moisturized. Avoid using petroleum-based products because they clog your pores and don’t let your skin breathe.

- Avoid picking or scratching your tattoo -

It is normal for your tattoo to feel itchy during the healing process, but avoid scratching or picking at the area as this can damage the skin and cause scarring. If you experience intense itching, gently pat the area with a clean towel or apply a small amount of anti-itch cream.

- Protect your tattoo from sun exposure -

After your tattoo has healed, it is important to protect it from direct sun exposure. The sun's UV rays can fade your tattoo and cause the ink to blur over time. Apply a high SPF sunscreen to your tattoo when you're out in the sun and wear protective clothing when possible.

- Be patient -

Tattoo healing times can vary depending on the size and location of the tattoo, as well as your body's healing process. It may take anywhere from a few days to several weeks for your tattoo to fully heal. Be patient and avoid rushing the healing process by exposing your tattoo to water, sun, or friction.

In conclusion, proper aftercare is essential for a beautiful and long-lasting tattoo. By following your tattoo artist's instructions and taking good care of your ink, you can ensure that your tattoo heals correctly and looks vibrant for years to come. Remember to keep your tattoo clean and moisturized, avoid picking or scratching the area, and protect it from sun exposure. With a little patience and care, you can enjoy your new ink for a lifetime.
